Led by the National Wildlife Research Center (USDA-APHIS), SASSE is a module-based teaching tool developed to reach a broad audience in the wildlife field. The tool presents an interactive graphical interface for learning how to identify effecient sampling designs for specific surveillance objectives. SASSE currently covers modules on the key surveillance objectives of detection, prevalence, and epidemiological dynamics in Version 1. Ongoing work is being done to develop modules on additional objectives related to seasonality or spatial trends. This repository contains training materials and documentation, links to the live app, app code, and model code.

AviFluMap, a H5 Bird Flu Wild Bird Model Tool for Australia’s Wild Birds is an online tool initiated by Wildlife Health Australia and developed by Deakin University in collaboration with BirdLife Australia. The tool is designed to support wildlife managers and biosecurity stakeholders in assessing and responding to the risk of H5 avian influenza (H5 bird flu) in Australia’s wild bird populations.  It allows users to better understand the potential role of wild birds to introduce and spread H5 bird flu in Australia, and helps guide monitoring efforts and actions to mitigate potential impacts. The tool:

  • Identifies and maps global sites where H5 bird flu outbreaks have recently occurred
  • Maps the migratory routes of wild bird species that may carry H5 bird flu to Australia
  • Pinpoints Australian locations where these birds are likely to arrive and where local wild bird populations reside—informing potential consequences of virus arrival and spread
  • Models the susceptibility of Australian bird species to H5 bird flu infection and associated sickness and death.
